AHRC Foundation Walk 2024: A Community United for Change

On a crisp autumn day, over 1,200 participants of all ages came together at the AHRC Foundation Walk 2024 to celebrate inclusion, community, and the incredible power of collective action. The energy was electric as families, friends, and supporters gathered to walk in support of children and adults with developmental disabilities (I/DD). The day was not only a testament to resilience but also a celebration of generosity—raising over $100,000 to enhance vital programs and services for more than 4,000 people across Long Island.

Highlights of the Day

The morning kicked off with inspiring speeches from AHRC Foundation leaders and community advocates. Among them, this year’s Grand Marshal, Michelle Rudoff, stood out as a beacon of hope and determination. Michelle, a passionate self-advocate and AHRC Nassau employee, has dedicated years to advancing person-centered supports and empowering others to live self-directed lives. Her story is a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we come together for a common cause.

“This walk isn’t just about raising money,” Michelle shared. “It’s about showing the world the strength of our community and how we’re creating a future where everyone belongs.”

Participants were also treated to a warm-up session led by Nicole Nolan Brown, who ensured everyone was energized and ready to tackle the route. Walkers were cheered on by enthusiastic volunteers and community supporters along the way, creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration.

Celebrating Success

This year’s walk featured 114 teams and over 755 registered walkers, each contributing to the day’s incredible success. Notable achievements included:

  • Top Individual Fundraiser: Gerry Powers, who raised $4,300 for the Powers’ Walkers team.
  • Top Team Fundraiser: Team Amanda 2024, led by Karen Anci, which raised over $15,000.
  • Team Spirit Award: The Plainview Powerhouse team, recognized for their enthusiasm and dedication.

Sponsors also played a pivotal role in the walk’s success. Special thanks go to Pilot RB, PharMerica, and other in-kind sponsors for their continued support of the AHRC Foundation’s mission.

Join Us in Shaping the Future

As the day wrapped up, participants left inspired by the stories shared, the connections made, and the impact created. Donations raised from the walk will strengthen essential programs such as education, health, recreation, and inclusion initiatives. Together, we are building a future where every individual is celebrated and included. Let’s keep walking forward—because the journey to creating a more inclusive world never stops.
